Loch Powers was the hottest guy I’d ever seen in my entire life.
And I hated him with every fiber of my being.
I’d practically known him since birth. Heck, we’d literally shared a crib as babies at his mom’s daycare.
Then I’d crushed on him hard when we hit middle school but he wouldn’t give geeky, glasses-wearing me the time of day. When his mom made him take me to the sixth grade dance, he’d humiliated me and I vowed to never talk to him again.
The next year when my family moved away, I told myself that if I never saw him again it’d be too soon.
Now I’m back and attending the same college, but I’m no longer the skinny, ugly girl who was so infatuated with him. And I’m so over him it’s not even funny.
But now that I’m no longer the ugly duckling, he’s set his sights on me, and I’m just not sure what to do with that.
Beat (#1 )
By Amity Cross
Beat is the first in a series and it shows major promise of what’s to come. There could possible be some triggers within as it contains darker parts of people. It is well worth it to read the beauty that is Amity Cross’ writing.
Renee ‘Ren’ Miller has been so strong for so long that she doesn’t know how to be anything else. When her moms dying wish is for her to find her father she has no choice but to honor it. Actually walking into Beat, however is a different story. He doesn’t recognize her at first and that stings. She starts to take a beginners class in MMA and she excels. What happens when Golden Boy Ash Fuller shows up though? Is it just her he seems to hate? Why though she has no idea. But when they start training together late at night will something more Coke from it or will that be as far as it goes? Of course meeting someone in a singlet and panties when you try to knock his block off with a bat can’t help matters.
Ashley ‘Ash’ Fuller, fighter that he is, has just come back from a four year break. Everyone believed him to be in Thailand. The truth will shock everyone. When he meets the feisty daughter of his old coach he doesn’t quite know what to think. When they begin training together at night he still doesn’t know. The feelings he starts to have, bloody hell they come out of nowhere. When she takes an interest in his extra curricular activities he is scared. Knowing what it’s like to have an uncontrollable beast within you is something he is used to. But the underground isn’t for everyone. Like him her fighting comes natural.
When a blast from the past kicks his anger to rage what will happen? When there is no choice but to leave the one you love when you can’t tell her… will she forgive him. Having your past and present collide can be dangerous but it can show you what a beating heart can do for you as well.

He was that boy in the playground.
The one that pulled your pigtails.
The one that lifted your dress in front of the entire school.
Now he’s that guy in the office.
The one that steals your lunch from the fridge.
The one that gets away with everything.
I’m sure you know him. Everyone knows that guy.
He’s a #JERK.
I thought he was my antidote, but it turns out that he’s just my new drug of choice.
Before him, it was heroin. And then they put me here against my will.
At the time it seemed like my only viable choice.
I preferred stumbling through life numb to it all. But now I’m here, and every sound and every emotion is heightened to a level I never knew existed. Then somehow, in a moment of weakness it became all about him.
He makes me feel things I never thought possible.
But I’m not sure if I’ll ever be able to recover…
Later Than Expected by Catherine Scott is the story of Ben Blackbird, who is Leo Blackbird’s father from book one. The story timeframe begins during events of book one. While this is part of a series, they can be read alone. I found this second book didn’t drawl me in as much as the first. It, to me, was very slow paced and somewhat seemed to drag: except for the first hook up, that was sudden. It was written well, so don’t get me wrong I did enjoy reading, just not as exciting and as planned out, I think, as I would have liked. I found I did not really care for the speech Ben was accustomed to revert to at times. Greta mentioned liking his non usage of contractions, but a few pages later I found them in his dialogue. Those are just my musings. I also found them to be sweet and caring. I love that no matter that Ben is older he gets his HEA with the woman he wants. It makes you think that even when life chews you up and spits you out there is still hope. The epilogue is bittersweet and just perfect. I do wonder who we will read about next, as there are many well developed supporting charterers in this series. I think Ms. Scott does a wonderful job of developing many different characters and lives those characters live.

Darker the Release (Revenge Saga, #2) by Claire Kent is the follow-up book to Sweet the Sin (Revenge Saga, #1) so technically it is not a standalone but some may be able to read this and get easily caught up on what’s going on but I say, why would you. To get the full effect of Caleb and Kelly’s story, I recommend starting with the first book.
After finishing the first book, I was very curious to see where Caleb and Kelly’s relationship was heading to next and when and/or if they would get answers to each of their questions about each another. At the start of this book, everything seems to be going normal between the two of them but then Kelly gets even closer to the truth with information she receives, so hence, her detective skills kick into high gear in this book. Now honestly, I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about her and everything she was doing behind Caleb’s back. For me personally, I just didn’t like it and I didn’t feel comfortable knowing what she was doing to Caleb. Sorry, I just couldn’t get onboard with it no matter what her reasons were and yes, they were legitimate, but still, it didn’t work for me personally.
Now Caleb, he is still wondering about Kelly as well and what secrets she continues to hide. He secretly does his own investigative work with the help of a friend and unfortunately the truth not only surfaces but punches him right in the gut. They both are left dealing with the truth as well as their feelings and it was not an easy road. My heart hurt for both but I have to say my heart hurt a bit more for Caleb. For me personally, I have to say that I couldn’t help but favor Caleb’s feelings over Kelly. I know crazy right considering why Kelly is searching for the truth but that’s just how I was feeling while reading.
Although the first book in this series set the stage for these two, this book definitely had all the mystery and angsty feelings. My only issue with this book was that I felt there was too much sex. I know, I know who doesn’t like sex in their books but for me it was over the top and I would have liked to see an even better emotional connection, a build-up between the two without always resorting to sex. Yes, they had intimate moments where they let each other get a glimpse of the other but it just wasn’t enough for me.
I think I had higher hopes for more added excitement, maybe a bit more angst and/or drama but all in all it was a satisfying wrap-up. Although we get an Epilogue, I would have liked even more if that makes sense because as much as it left me happy I personally felt that I wanted “more” out of it.
This series was my first glimpse into Claire Kent’s work and it definitely will not be my last.
