Compulsive (Liar #1) by Lia Fairchild is book one of a two book series and if I could have rated this more than 5 Stars, you can bet that I would have! Compulsive is most definitely right up there with some of the best written books that I have ever read and I don’t say that lightly. This was a real literary gem.
First, let me start off saying, that once again, I have found myself venturing out of my comfort zone and taking a chance on a new author for me and I cannot tell you how ecstatic I am at this moment. Compulsive blew me away completely. This story was brilliantly written, it was flawless, it hooked me from the moment I began reading and kept me engrossed until the very last word. The emotions I felt while reading were all over the place. At times, I was happy, sad, mad, confused and super emotional, which buy the way, is an understatement. There were not only multiple complexities to this story but multiple dimensions as well and let me tell you this, at approximately the 82% percent mark, I just lost it completely. I couldn’t hold in my emotions any longer and at the point in the story the damn of tears just broke and I had to put my kindle down for a few moments so I could compose myself before I started the book back up.
Please, if you take away anything from this review, do yourself a favor and go into this story “blind”, I did and I am so glad that I made that decision. I want to give you a ‘feel” of what this story was for me but I also want to do it without giving away the story because you “need” to experience this book from start to finish without any preconceived notions or ideas, etc. I went into this book only thinking it would be based on a girl who was a liar and boy oh boy, I couldn’t have been anymore mistaken because this book was SO much more than that and that’s all I will say.
The main characters, Gray and Daniel, all I can say is I am blown away by them. Gray, talk about a girl crush, I mean I loved this girl hard from the start and by the end, heck, anyone man or woman would want this woman in their life because yes, she was more than just a girl who lied. Gray was a complex character, she was broken but equally strong inside, she had her insecurities and doubts about herself but yet her selflessness when it came to others, omg, she was just amazing. She was caring, loving, kind and yet so heartbroken on the inside due to the demons she has held onto from her past. Gray’s childhood was tragic in every sense and she lashed out in her older years because she had no real coping skills, she dealt with life’s hard blows by engaging in self-destruction and until she could face her demons head on, she would be unable to move ahead in a true sense. Now with that being said, you cannot help but feel for this girl, you can’t help but love her so fiercely that you want to reach you through your kindle and hold her and tell her she is a remarkable woman even though she hasn’t come to grips with that yet. Slowly, ever so slowly you see Gray emerge from her self-imposed cocoon and start the transformation into the most beautiful butterfly ever known. Gosh, I get chills just thinking about her journey from the start of the book until the end, absolutely beautiful.
Daniel, oh my, what can I say about this man other than that I also loved him just as hard as Gray but in a totally different way. He was kind, he was caring, he was devoted and yet so conflicted in his own right. He was also a complete mystery to me. As much as we saw what a beautiful man he was, I got the sense he had his own demons inside that he was battling. As a reader, we are lead to believe that he has some “secret” that he is carrying around that is holding him back in life. I didn’t get a single hint at what was holding him back besides the obvious until almost the end. I am so eager to see what will happen as their story continues in the follow-up book. They have a lot to work out and I am not going to lie, I am quite nervous as to how the rest of their story will play out.
The supporting cast of characters were fantastic! Nathan, oh boy, I was honestly swooning over him and I can’t help but feel my heart break for him too. Alyssa, she was the greatest and I adored her and her relationship with Gray. Their relationship was heartwarming, touching, caring, it was beyond beautiful and it truly “defined” Gray’s character for me hands down and I loved every single second of their interactions together. Rita and Jessica, now, that storyline was tragically beautiful and again just added that much more depth to this fantastic storyline and to the characters development most importantly. Gray’s dad and especially Becca, hmmm, I have some sneaky suspicions going on in my head right now and I am curious to see how they will play out in this storyline in the future too.
What more can I say about this story but to encourage you to pick up this book and read it for yourself. It was so different and unique, it was mysterious, heartbreaking, heartwarming and I went through a roller coaster of emotions the whole way through. I felt like I was watching a movie rather than reading a book, it was that fascinating and intense. It was so much more than a typical romance novel, it was a story of self-discovery and overcoming tragedy, it was about second chances and life learning lessons and it was beautiful and loving and sorry, there are so many words I could use to describe this book but yet so hard to put in writing.
Author Lia Fairchild, I am in awe of your talents as a writer, this book for me was a true literary masterpiece and I cannot thank you enough for the pleasure of experiencing this story. I am diving straight into the next book because I not only have to know, I absolutely NEED to know what is going to happen to my beautiful Gray and Daniel.
