So I have to admit the title of this one by itself both intrigued me and concerned me in equal measures. Capture Me, by Anna Zaires is essentially exactly what it sounds like. A one-night stand used to gain information to ensure her lovers demise. Only both parties developed feelings in that one night and that leads to major complications as the story unfolds. Having read the synopsis, I knew going in that this was going to be a bumpy ride. I mean, how much messier does it get than developing feelings for the man you know that you are under orders to kill? That being said, I went into this one with an open mind and heart, especially knowing there was a sequel to come– one that I now can’t wait to read. This 4-star story managed to do the one thing it needed to for me to pay attention and be ready for more…it made me care about both Lucas and Yulia — in spite of both parties many faults.
Lucas is one sexy stud muffin. That much remains true even when he is understandably being a total tool. When his plane goes down and he miraculously survives, it doesn’t take him long to put two and two together and realize how the Ukraine got their intelligence. At the end of the day, she was instrumental in his near demise and in spite of it all, he realized that as much as he wants revenge he also still wants Yulia– and he doesn’t know what to do with it. After she’s captured and tortured by the Russians, Lucas arranges for her to be transferred into his care so that he can attempt to get his own information from her. He doesn’t expect to feel so strongly about seeing the condition she is in after her time with the Russians. He finds her a very malnourished and broken mess…and those feelings begin to confuse and break him.
Yulia is as confused by their current situation as Lucas is. He doesn’t know it yet but after just that one night with him, it killed her to have to turn around and betray him. She survived her two months of torture by imagining that she didn’t kill him, that they were together and a real couple. So when she is suddenly transferred into Lucas’ care she is totally confused. She still wants him, too, but she also knows to be scared. She was responsible for trying to kill him and she doesn’t expect him to just let that go. If she had her way, though, she would be able to just be with him with nothing in their way. The question is will Lucas really be willing to listen when she is ready to talk?
The book is a perfect set up for its successor that is thankfully coming soon. Make no mistake, while there is definitely emotion hidden beneath the drama…it is also a dark read and at times quite violent. This is a book that is about betrayal colliding with lust. There are elements of pretty gruesome torture and those moments are tough to get through. At the end of the day though, it was a great story. I genuinely care that Yulia and Lucas find their way through this mess. I want them to make it and I can’t wait to find out how things work out in the next book for them.
