This gripping story from Gen Ryan is about a haunted young woman named Maddie, or Aimee, who has been running from her past since she was very young. Maddie’s father is a serial killer who killed her mother and tried to kill Maddie when she was seven. Saved by the young boy next door, Scott, Maddie escapes her father and spends her life studying criminology and working towards being an FBI agent. After many years, Maddie’s father has escaped prison and the hunt is on. Maddie meets her first FBI guard and trainer, Liam, while running one morning and they hit it off immediately. Neither of them know just how much time they will be spending together in the upcoming months as they are unaware of their connection. While heading to her dissertation, Maddie is stopped by eyes from her past. Scott, all grown up and an FBI agent now, has been keeping an eye on Maddie since her father escaped. She is shocked but thrilled to see Scott again until she hears why he’s been following her. Her adoptive uncle is the assistant director in the FBI and wants nothing more than to protect Maddie. So he sends Maddie to her Quantico training early, with Liam and Scott in tow. Liam is a troubled man whose past haunts him worse than Maddie’s. His dark feelings lead him to darker places as he tries to outrun what can’t be seen. Scott and Liam work to protect Maddie while passions ignite in this heart wrenching book. This is the first book in a series, but I believe could be a standalone. It was a bit more graphic that books I normally prefer, but the story was so interesting that I couldn’t put it down. I would recommend to any thriller or romance readers. Four stars.
