Through the Veil by Colleen Halverson is the first book in the Aisling Chronicles. Elizabeth Tanner is a grad student trying to finish her master’s thesis. She’s studying an ancient Irish text. Unbeknownst to her, the book is cursed. Mythical creatures attack and Finn O’Connell, commander of Trinity’s elite warriors, takes her under his wing promising to protect her. Elizabeth discovers she’s half-fae (fairy) and her life flips upside down.
Finn O’Connell is commander of the Fianna, protector of the mortal world. He tries his best to protect Elizabeth and in the process, loses his heart to her. Yet it is a love forbidden. The Trinity forbids love and alliances between species. The blood must remain pure.
Elizabeth, growing up in the mortal world, only read about fairies. She studied all the old legends. It was hard to believe they were real. There are many different species of fae. She is an aisling, one of the rarest and most powerful. She is able to travel between worlds.
There is a war going on for thousands of years in the fae world, between the dark and the light fairies. To appease the dark lord and end the war, Elizabeth is sacrificed by the leaders of Trinity as his bride. To save herself, she must fully accept her powers and find the strength to overcome her evil husband. In the process, bringing peace to Tir Na Nog, the land of the fae.
The Ailing Chronicles is filled with love and passion, lies and deception, good and evil. It is a story of a battle of wills and right and wrong. Colleen Halverson does an excellent job weaving a tale and bringing to life the old Irish legends. You will be enthralled from beginning to end.
I thoroughly enjoyed following Elizabeth overcome her struggles and come into her own. There is some sexual content and explicit language. I would recommend an audience of sixteen and over. I can’t wait to read book two.
