Wow. When bad things happen your first question/response is “Why? Why would God, if there really is one, let this happen?” Many believers and non-believers question life and the reason certain things happen. In this real life story, When God Doesn’t Fix It by Laura Story, Laura’s husband, Martin, is diagnosed with a brain tumor. This life twist puts her faith to the test but at the same time helps her to build a better relationship with Jesus. Laura experiences the same confusion many people do after God changes the path they are on.
“We no longer had a road to follow. No signposts marked the way back to the path we’d so carefully planned. We were off-roading into the darkest abyss I’d ever faced and there was nothing I could do.”
This book hits on many aspects of life, sickness, marriage, and children. Laura had to experience the bad to understand the good.
“We don’t gain God’s blessings by hanging on. We gain them by letting go. And when we gain them that’s when we can use them to bless others.”
While learning to live with Martin’s condition and understanding God’s plan, Laura and Martin had to change some of their dreams. Some dreams had to fade away while others just needed to have a different path than originally thought. One of my favorite situations was when Laura thought she was helping Martin with his daily schedule and helping him grow. When she realizes she isn’t helping him she discovers she can change too. “One of the paradoxes of marriage is that wives want their husbands to be great men. And men want their wives to be great women. But we forget that to be truly great, we have to help our spouses be great.”
This story is recommended for everyone and especially anyone needing a reality check. A wake up call if you will. Even if you don’t believe in God, your path can change whether you want it to or not. How you react and change will determine exactly how happy you will be.
